CMA’s Tomorrow Night

The 2011 CMA (Country Music Awards) are tomorrow night live on ABC!
This time around, it is going to be hosted by…. Wait, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley are hosting again??  Eh, they’ve done a good job before, I’m sure they’ll be great, funny hosts again.

Since I can remember, I have been a country fan to the bone.  My first CD, Patty Lovelace “Classics”, a cd not a lot of people have but I still like it.  And overtime, I have seen artists go from the bottom and only having one song on the radio to becoming a main eventer.  I remember when I first heard “Hicktown” on the radio, I remember when Chris Young won his season of Nashville Star, even when Miranda Lambert lost, yes lost her season of Nashville Star.  Anybody remember who she lost to??  Does the name Buddy Jewell ring a bell at all?

The thing with country music is that it seems like a community, it seems as if you listen to country music for a few months, you get to know the artists and when you watch these country music awards shows, you actually know the artists and “usually” don’t ask who these people are.  By listening to it and paying attention to it for a while, you just feel like a part of country music.  Point being, since I have been listening to it, I remember when Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, all were rising stars; and Garth Brooks and Shania Twain were the two top superstars in Country music.  Now, Garth is retired, Shania has been out of the game for some time, Tim and Faith aren’t really coming out with many hits anymore.  Kenny has won three Entertainer of the Year awards, a young girl started in country music as a teenager and went on in record time to become Entertainer of the Year, and it seems to be that her hype is calming down now.  And now, it the headliners in country music seem like a brand new batch of superstars who it seems like just the other day, these stars were having their first song hit the radio.

The big winners this year seem to me like Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert.  Miranda has been cleaning house lately but Jason hasn’t had “his” show yet.  And I think this is going to be “his” year.

Let’s go through the nominees……

MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
Sam Bush – Mandolin
Jerry Douglas – Dobro
Paul Franklin – Steel Guitar
Dann Huff – Guitar—-My Pick
Mac McAnally – Guitar
—To be fair, this is a category I have never had much luck with.  I only get it right about 40% of the time.  So this is a shot in the dark.

MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
“As She’s Walking Away”
Zac Brown Band featuring Alan Jackson
Southern Ground Artists/Atlantic Records

“Coal Miner’s Daughter”
Loretta Lynn, Sheryl Crow, and Miranda Lambert
Columbia Records Nashville

“Don’t You Wanna Stay”
Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson
Broken Bow Records

“Old Alabama”
Brad Paisley featuring Alabama
Arista Nashville—————————————My Pick

“You and Tequila”
Kenny Chesney featuring Grace Potter
BNA Records
VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR
The Civil Wars
Montgomery Gentry
Steel Magnolia
Sugarland———————–My Pick
Thompson Square
—I think picking Sugarland is a pretty safe pick, but I do think in a few years, if Thompson Square can keep up their momentum, they could very well be some contenders in this category.

VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR
The Band Perry
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
Rascal Flatts
Zac Brown Band————-My Pick
—This has been a great year for Zac Brown Band but if they lose, it will be to Lady Antebellum.  Rascal Flatts has just been missing those monster hits that were having through the early 00′s.

SONG OF THE YEAR
“Colder Weather”
Zac Brown, Wyatt Durrette, Levi Lowrey, and Coy Bowles – songwriters

“Dirt Road Anthem”
Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford – songwriters

“If I Die Young”
Kimberly Perry – songwriter

“Mean”
Taylor Swift – songwriter

“You and Tequila”
Matraca Berg and Deana Carter – songwriters——————-My Pick
—This is a category that gets mixed up with Single of the Year a lot.  Just to clarify for those of you who get confused, this is based on the lyrics, Single of the Year is about the production of the song.  This is a tough category but I think Matraca Berg and Deana Carter wrote an amazing song.  But I honestly think that, with this category, each nominee deserves it, so I am happy with any of these picks.  Wait, I take that back, if Taylor Swift wins this category, there is a problem.  …….Let the hate mail rain in.
SINGLE OF THE YEAR
“A Little Bit Stronger”
Sara Evans
Produced by Tony Brown
RCA Nashville

“Colder Weather”
Zac Brown Band
Produced by Keith Stegall and Zac Brown
Southern Ground Artists/Atlantic Records

“Don’t You Wanna Stay”
Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson
Produced by Michael Knox
Broken Bow Records———————————–My Pick

“Honey Bee”
Blake Shelton
Produced by Scott Hendricks
Warner Bros. Nashville

“If I Die Young”
The Band Perry
Produced by Paul Worley
Republic Nashville
—This is where Jason Aldean starts winning some awards.  I think the day this was released to radio, I heard four or five people singing it on their own that day.  When you get a song that lights up the fans like this, not even just country, all music fans, you know you have a great song.  The other songs in this category are great songs but did not have the impact that this song had.  Clear winner.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR
“Honey Bee”
Blake Shelton
Directed by Trey Fanjoy

“If I Die Young”
The Band Perry
Directed by David McClister

“Mean”
Taylor Swift
Directed by Declan Whitebloom

“Old Alabama”
Brad Paisley featuring Alabama
Directed by Jim Shea——————————————My Pick

“You and Tequila”
Kenny Chesney featuring Grace Potter
Directd by Shaun Silva
—To me, a most of the videos this year were average.  There is only a handful of videos a year that really deserve an award, but this year, none really stood out.  I think that if these are your nominees, than Jim Shea should get the honors, but I can see Trey Fanjoy getting the award.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
All About Tonight
Blake Shelton
Produced by Scott Hendricks
Warner Bros. Nashville

My Kinda Party
Jason Aldean
Produced by Michael Knox
Broken Bow Records—————————————————–My Pick

Speak Now
Taylor Swift
Produced by Nathan Chapman and Taylor Swift
Big Machine Records

This Is Country Music
Brad Paisley
Produced by Frank Rogers
Arista Nashville

You Get What You Give
Zac Brown Band
Produced by Keith Stegall and Zac Brown
Southern Ground Artists/Atlantic Records
—There may not have been great videos this year, but there definitely were some great albums.  The only thing I would change about this category is switch out Taylor Swift’s Speak Now for Eric Church’s Chief.  It’s not that I hate Taylor Swift or anything, I just wasn’t blown away by her this year.  So don’t hate me.  Now if you did switch it out, Chief would take the award, but since it’s not nominated, my pick goes to My Kinda Party.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
The Band Perry
Luke Bryan——————————–My Pick
Eric Church
Thompson Square
Chris Young
—In my opinion, throw these nominees out the window except for The Band Perry and Thompson Square.  They are the only ones who should actually be considered a New Artist.  For example, Luke Bryan and Chris Young were both nominated last year.  Explain how you can be a New Artist a couple of years in a row.  I would switch out Luke Bryan, Eric Church, and Chris Young for Brantley Gilbert, Hunter Hayes and Scotty McCreery (even though I don’t find Scotty McCreery’s music very interesting.)

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Sara Evans
Miranda Lambert————————————-My Pick
Martina McBride
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood
—Her or Carrie, but I am very glad to see Sara Evans making a comeback.

MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Jason Aldean——————————-My Pick
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
Blake Shelton
Keith Urban
—As I said, I think this is Jason’s year.

…………..
…………..
And finally, the big one…..
ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
Jason Aldean——————————My Pick
Brad Paisley
Blake Shelton
Taylor Swift
Keith Urban
—Jason’s year.  However, don’t kill me, again here, I would switch out Taylor Swift for someone else.  I’m thinking maybe Tim McGraw considering he has been entertaining in both country music and film!

Those are my picks.  Take them how you please.  Be sure to check out the 45th Annual CMA‘s tomorrow night at 8/7c.

How did I do?  Leave a comment and let me know.
